AIR – Farewell Song

March 21, 2011

shiroku togireta yume no kirehashi o tsukamaete shounen wa hashiru

Grasping the white scraps of an interrupted dream, a boy runs
When he lets go, they disappear into the distant sound of the wind

hitotsu dake no omoi o tobashite

Making just one thought fly

hitori fumidasu ashi dake mite’ru

The picture painted on the insides of my eyelids grows hazy, even if I rub them with my palms
The kindness I could once see is now gone
I just look at my feet, stepping forward alone

I listened to the singing until it disappeared when morning came

nomichi no saki de akaku ikiru hoozuki segande   kodomo ga hashaide’ru
itsuka shitta yasashisa no naka ni mo
onaji fuukei   aru nara ii ne

Disturbing the Chinese lanterns [1] that bloom red on the trail, the children frolic
It would be nice if the scenery were the same
In the kindness that I once knew

bokura ga nokoshita ano ashiato o itsumademo otte’ta

I listened to the singing until it disappeared when morning came
I followed the footprints we’d left behind into the distance

bokura ga nokoshita ano ashiato o dokomademo otte’ta

I always, always listened to the singing that disappeared
I followed the footprints that we’d left everywhere

sou owari wa wakare to aru mono dakara subete oite yuku
asa ni wa hizashi no naka   atarashii uta   kuchizusande iru

Yes, because endings come with partings, I’m leaving everything behind
I’m humming a new song in the morning sun’s rays

Translator’s Notes:
[1] Chinese lanterns, or hoozuki, are a kind of flower.
