Shimamiya Eiko – Ginga no Ko

August 7, 2012

Ginga no Ko – 銀河の子- Children of the Milky Way

ushiro ni hitotsu tabaneta kami o hodokinagara
yami to hikari ga majiwaru basho o mezashite yuku

Letting down my hair that was tied up in the back
I’m aiming for the place where darkness and light mix

furube yurayura kotoba no chikara de tsukinukero
arehateta kono daichi ni saku hana ni naru tame ni
ichi wa sen ni wakareta

Pierce through with the power of trembling words
To become a flower blooming on this desolated earth
One separated into a thousand

warera ginga no ko
inochi o tomosare nishi e higashi e
tooku kita michi o wasureru toki ga itsuka kite mo
kono chi no naka ni kizamarete kagayaku ESSENSHARU

We are the children of the Milky Way
Illuminate lives, to the east and to the west
Even if there comes a time when we forget the long road we’ve walked
The shining essential is engraved in our blood

furiageta kobushi no ue ni aoi tori ga tomari
soshite sen wa ichi e to

One two three four five six seven eight- where is my heart? [1]
A blue bird perches on my upraised fist
And then the thousand, into one…

warera ginga no ko
hoshi no mei o uke kita e minami e
tani o nuu you ni sobietatsu BIRU no aida o surinukete yukeba
kaze o kiri kagayaku ESSENSHARU
ai o shiri kagayaku ESSENSHARU
sanzen to kagayaku ESSENSHARU

We are the children of the Milky Way
Accept the destiny of the stars, to the north and to the south
If we slip through the spaces between the towering buildings as if sewing up the valleys
We’ll have the shining essential that cuts through the wind
The shining essential that knows love
The brilliantly shining essential

Translator’s Notes:

[1] This is a pun- if she’d continued counting the next number would have been “kokono” (nine), but instead she says “kokoro” (heart).

(Original lyrics by Shimamiya Eiko.)
