Tenshi [Ange] no Chouzou – 天使の彫像 – The Angel Statue

nochi no yo ni “kami no te o motsu mono”
to shousareru chouzouka “Auguste Laurant”
senran no saichuu ni ushinaware heiwa to tomo ni sugata o arawashita to sareru
imada shinpi no usufu [veil] ni tsutsumareta chouzou kare no kitai no kessaku
“Tenshi” [ange] ni himerareshi shirarezaru “monogatari” [Roman]…

Auguste Laurant, the sculptor
Who would later be known as “the man with the hands of God”
Vanished in the midst of war and reappeared with the return of peace.
The statue still shrouded in the veil of mystery was his rare masterpiece
And in that angel, an unknown story is hidden….

“monoiwanu tsumetai ishi ni inochi o tomoseru nado to

“To kindle the spark of life in cold, speechless stone,
As the ordinary folk say, would be nothing more than mere vanity.
I simply take things into my hands to allow what exists to exist
And, as if to kiss that warmth, give shape to my thoughts…”

fuusha koya [moulin a vent] sora o daite mawaritsudzukeru oka no ue

The windmill embraced the sky and went on spinning atop the hill
His studio was a noiseless shadow that seemed to forbid entry to all others

He worked all by himself, not even knowing the face of our child…

{tarinai no wa kotesaki no sobyouryoku [dessin] de wa nai — genjitsu o mo koeru souzouryoku [imagination]}
“aa… hikari o … aa… motto hikari o… sunawachi souzou [creation]… urei no hikari o…”

{What is lacking is not cleverness of design — it is the imagination to surpass reality.}
“Ah… light… ah… more light… that is to say, creation… the light of sorrow…”

shougai awanu to chikainagara ashigeku kayou shuudouin [monastere]
kodomo-tachi no waraigoe kabegoshi ni kiite iru…
“kimi no te ga ima tsukande iru de arou sono {ishi} wa totemo kowareyasui
sono te o hanashite wa naranai tatoe nani ga osoou to mo…

Though he swore never to meet them in his life, on his frequent visits to the monastery
He would listen to the laughing voices of the children through the wall…
“The stone you are now holding in your hand is very fragile
You must never let it go, no matter what should confront you…”

He worked alone day after day, not even knowing the face of our child…

{hitsuyou na no wa sugishi hi no koukai [regret] de wa nai — gensou o mo tsumugu aijou [affection]}
“aa… hikari o… aa… motto hikari o… sunawachi shokuzai [expiation]… sukui no hikari o…”

{What is necessary is not regret over days past — it is the affection to weave illusions.}
“Ah… light… ah… more light… that is to say, expiation… the light of salvation…”

ika naru kenja de are koboreru suna wa tomerarenai
kare ni youi sareta gin’iro no sunadokei nokosareta suna wa ato wazuka…

However wise a man may be, he cannot stop the flow of the sands of time
There were only a few grains left in his silver hourglass…

hahaoya no hi o ubatte kono yo ni tomotta chiisa na {honoo}
sono kagayaki o nikunde shimatta oroka na otoko no saigo no waruagaki…

A small flame was lit in this world at the cost of its mother’s light
And this was the futile, dying struggle of a foolish man who had grown to hate that glimmering

— “aa… mou omoinokosu koto wa nai yatto waratte kureta ne…”

He spread the wings of his imagination, and soon the wings on the statue’s back were spread as well.
— “Ah… I have no more regrets… you’ve finally smiled at me…”

(“soko ni ROMAN wa aru no kashira?”)

(“Could a story be found over there?”)
