Jinsei wa Ireko Ningyou (Matryoshka) – 人生は入れ子人形 (Матрёшка) – Life is a Nesting Doll (Matryoshka)

ROSHIA-jin goushou: Aleksey Romanovich Zvolinskiy

Aleksey Romanovich Zvolinskiy: the Russian billionaire

Zvolinskiy

(“watakushi kodai no ROMAN ni Zvolinskiy”
“Aa ana ga attara horitai!”)

(“I’m very Zvolinskied[1] by the ancient tales!
Ahh, if there’s a hole to be dug, I want to dig it!”)

(“Ladies and gentlemen, saa, honjitsu o-kikasesuru no wa
Khorosho, khorosho, harikitte mairimashou
Saa, ude o kuminagara ashi no suji o nobasu undou!”)

(“Come, ladies and gentlemen! What you have the honor of hearing today is the story of my brilliant youth!
We shall open the curtain on the sad, sad story of my impoverished upbringing!”
Khorosho! Khorosho![2] Don’t just stand there!
Come, link your arms and stretch out the muscles of your legs!”)

akaku yurameku danro [pechka] uchi ni mo atta no ni
kanashii keredo moyasubeki maki ga nakatta
otouto-tachi wa itsumo chokomaka ugoite’ta
hara wa heru kedo jitto shite’tara koocchimau kara

Though my house had a hearth that flickered red
Alas, we had no firewood
My little brothers always moved quickly
Because though their bellies ached with hunger, if they stood still too long they’d freeze

unmei no okurimono fukou o tsumeta ireko ningyou [matryoshka]
akete mo akete mo kanashimi bakari

The gifts of fate are like a matryoshka of ill luck
You open one doll after another, but find only sadness

(“Khorosho! Khorosho! Borscht ni wa kurokoshou!
Saa, niban wa masumasu namida chocho girenskii”)

(“Khorosho! Khorosho! Borscht is made with black pepper!
Now then, part two is even more heartbreakinskiy!”)

shiroku kirameku taiga [Volga] kaze o kirisaite
hashire basha [troika] uchi wa tooi ka sora kakero
imouto-tachi mo itsumo hara o sukasete’ta
ganbare matsumai yo [Katyusha] gin no o-chuusha kitto yoku naru sa

The glittering white Volga cut through the wind
Oh, racing troika[3], are you far from home? Fly through the sky!
My little sisters’ bellies were always empty too
Oh, youngest sister [Katyusha], keep holding on–this silver injection will surely make you well

(“Onii-chan, o-hara suita yo…”
“Ganbare!”
“Itee!”)

(“Big brother, I’m hungry!”
“Hold on!”
“It hurts!”)

jinsei wa okurimono fujouri tsumeta ireko ningyou [matryoshka]
akete mo akete mo kurushimi bakari

Life is a gift like a matryoshka of absurdity
You open one doll after another, but find only suffering

(“Now, everybody, make sure you have your handkerchiefs close at hand.
All this has only been the prologue–the true tragedy begins here!”)

The sickly girl’s medical bills quickly burned through the family’s meager finances
And then their papa was killed in a cave-in in a distant coal mine
Though the path may be steep to climb, tumbling down it takes only a moment

shiseru shoujo no souretsu ni aishita futari no kage wa naku
Mama mo shoufu no kakkou de muri ga tagatte tabidateri
donna ni kewashiki sakamichi mo korogari ochireba masa ni setsuna

The dead girl’s funeral was missing the shadows of two people who had loved her
Her mother, overworked and looking like a harlot, had set off on a journey
However steep the path may be, tumbling down it takes only a moment

(“Anata, a-na-ta!”
“Oo, Eirene!! Itooshi no waga tsuma yo… watashi, kimi no miryoku ni Zvolinskiy!”
“Nani baka na koto o osshatteru n’desu ka, sagyou no hou wa dou desu no?”
“Junchou, kaichou, zekkouchou! Ima wa choudo kyuukei shite ita tokoro desu. Aa, kimi-tachi wa mou ii desu yo. Hai, arigatou. Spasibo, spasibo.”
“Tsurenai wa ne”
“Mou owari?”
“Mou ii wa! Ikimasho”
“Matte yo Katia”
“Matte! Ojou-sama!”
“Ohon, sore de wa shokun! Harikitte sagyou o saikai itashimashou!”)

(“Dear! Dear!”
“Oh, Eirene! My beloved wife! I am Zvolinskied by your charms!”
“What nonsense are you going on about? How’s business?”
“Terrific! Fantastic! Phenomenal! I was just taking a little break. All right, you’re done now. Yes, thank you. Spasibo, spasibo.”
“That’s cold!”
“It’s already over?”
“That’s it! Let’s go.”
“Wait, Katia!”
“Wait! My lady!”
“All right, ladies and gentlemen! Don’t just stand there, let’s get back to work!”)

hotte mo hotte mo suna bakari dore dake hotte mo myaku ga nai
haikin yarou no mousou sa muda na doryoku to tasha [hito] wa iu
soredemo anata wa akiramenai wa

I dig and dig, but find only sand–however much I dig, I can’t find a vein
Others say it’s just the delusion of a money-grubbing bastard, a waste of effort
But you won’t give up, will you, dear?

hotte wa hotte wa sunabokori dore dake hotte mo kiri ga nai
narikin yarou no douraku sa baka na otoko to gakusha [hito] wa warau
soredemo watashi wa tsuite yuku wa

Digging and digging just raises a cloud of sand–however much I dig, there’s no end
Scholars laugh that it’s just the hobby of a noveau-riche bastard, an idiotic man
But even so, I’ll reach it with you

(anata wa ) hoshii wake ja nai (moeru you na) yume ga mitai dake
unmei [Moira] ga nozomu no wa kigeki ka higeki ka
ima mou ichido {shinwa} o rekishi no butai ni tatasetai…

(You’ll set) It’s not that I want (The dazzling) Glittering gold or
(World) Great renown (On fire) I just want to have a dream
Does Moira desire a comedy or a tragedy?
Now, once again, I want to let the legend stand on history’s stage…

mazushii ikka wa hanarebanare watashi wa shouka e decchiboukou
watashi (anata) o sasaeta no wa kazoku no sonzai to haha no katami to natta issatsu no hon

I left my poor family and was apprenticed to a merchant
I was mocked for my ugly face, but I worked harder than anyone
What kept me (you) going was the existence of my (your) family and a book of poetry that was a memento of my (your) mother

–“unmei ga zankoku da saredo kanojo o osoreruna
megami [Moira] ga tatakawanu mono ni hohoemu koto nado keshite nai no dakara”–

“Fate is cruel, but do not fear her
For Moira surely will not smile on those who do not fight”

Life is a gift like a matryoshka of absurdity
Even so, as long as there’s a hole to be dug, I suppose I’ll continue to dig (you’ll continue to dig, won’t you?)

(「Ohoo!

(“Ohoo! Eirene, Eirene!”
“Anata, nani?”
“Khorosho, khorosho, khoroshooo!!!”
“E? Uwa, subarashii wa…!”)

(“Ohoo! Eirene, Eirene!”
“What is it, dear?”
“Khorosho, khorosho, khoroshooo!!!”
“Eh? Oh my, that’s wonderful…!)

Notes:

[1] Zvolinskiy seems to like to use his own name in place of a verb. It doesn’t actually mean anything in and of itself.
[2] Russian for “Wonderful!”
[3] A carriage pulled by three horses, historically popular in Russia. The mention of the troika flying may be a reference to a famous quote by Nikolai Gogol using a similar metaphor–or it may just be a coincidence.

The words in square brackets are what is sung, where it differs from what is written in the lyrics booklet. The stanzas in parentheses are not in the lyrics booklet and have been transcribed by ear.

(Original lyrics by Revo.)
