Hifukiyama no Mahoutsukai – 火吹き山の魔法使い – The Wizard of the Flaming Mountain

kimi wa mahoutsukai ni akogarete
kokontouzai kara ayashige na shomotsu o
atsumete wa yomiasaru hibi
aru hi kimi wa au nari kou iu n’da
“te ni motte’ru dake de
mahou o tsukau koto ga dekiru
ishi ga aru rashii
zehi sagasu no o tetsudatte kure” to
basho wa kakkazan no fukaku
soko de nemureru ryuu ga mamotte’ru to ka
nante FANTAJII na hanashi da
tozan suru shitaku shite tatakau junbi mo shite
kimi no HERUMETTO sugata ni wa
warai ga tomannai
nante kokkei na boukensha ikkou da

In those days, you wanted to be a wizard
You gathered strange books from all corners of the earth
And read them all
One day when we met the first thing you said was,
“I hear there’s a stone
That will let you do magic
Just by holding it in your hand
Please help me search for it”
The stone lay deep within an active volcano
And there it was guarded by a sleeping dragon
Like in some fantasy story
You made preparations for mountain-climbing and fighting
I couldn’t stop laughing
Looking at you in your helmet
We were such a ridiculous adventuring party

yamamichi wa kewashisugite
somosomo nimotsu ga oosugiru
demo hontou ni ryuu ga iru nara
kore gurai wa hitsuyou
doushite mahou nante
tsukaitai no ka to kiku to
kimi wa soppo o muite
“kono te de aru hito o mamoritai”
kakkou ni tsuki soko ni orihajimeta
nanika ga goo to naita
masaka hontou ni ryuu ga iru nante!
demo ima wa genjitsu o minakya
shinjau!
kimi wa taimatsu kakage
kocchi da to otori ni naru
kyodai na ikimono ga
kimi o oikonde itta
aa doko ni ishi wa aru n’da?
mitsukenakya!

The mountain road was too steep
And we had too much luggage
But if there was really a dragon
Then we were going to need it all
When I asked you
“Why do you want to do magic, anyway?”
You lokoed away and said
“I want to be able to protect a certain someone with my own two hands”
We reached the mouth of the volcano and started to descend into it
Something gave a roar
I couldn’t believe there was really a dragon!
But if we didn’t face reality now
We’d die!
You lit your torch
And said “Over here!”, luring him away from me
The giant beast
Chased after you
Ahh, where is that stone?
I have to find it!

マグマの近くに 光るものがあった
焼け付くような中
その石を手に取る

MAGUMA no chikaku ni hikaru mono ga atta
yaketsuku you na naka
sono ishi o te ni toru

Near the magma, something glittered
A stone that looked like it was on fire inside
I picked it up

ryuu yo moero sou tsuyoku nenjita
kiseki ga makiokotta
ryuu wa honoo ni tsutsumare
ashi o fumihazushi MAGUMA ni ochita
kuchi ni wa kimi ga kuwaerarete’ta
futatabi nenjita
kimi yo DAIYAMONDO ni nare
MAGUMA ni tokenai
itsuka kanarazu kimi o sukuidasu
motto mahou o kiwamete

“Burn, dragon!” I willed as hard as I could
Then a miracle happened
The dragon, wreathed in flame,
Missed its footing and fell into the magma
But you were in its mouth
So I willed another thing to happen:
“Become a diamond
Which will not melt in the magma
And someday I’ll definitely come back to rescue you
When I’ve mastered magic more”

(Original lyrics by Maeda Jun.)
