August 27, 2014

Shi to Nageki no Kaze no Miyako (Ilion) – 死と嘆きと風の都 (Ιλιον) – The Capital of the Wind, Filled with Death and Lamentation (Ilion)

“Cassandra, Melissa, and their apprentice: the Hetaerae.” [1]

(“Isoide, anata-tachi. Anemos no shinkan-sama ga o-machi yo.”
“Oi, shin’iri, GUZUGUZU shite koto wa atai no tekken ga hi o fuku yo.”
“Gomen nasai!”)

(“Hurry up, you two. The priest of Anemos is waiting.”
“Hey, apprentice, if you keep dawdling my fist is going to spew fire!”
“I’m sorry!”)

jobanzoku [Amazon] no you na wanryoku wa nai keredo
gei no nai tada no baita [pornai] to chigau wa
aa… hanadai [drachma] to magokoro o hikikae ni uruwashi no yume o uru

We may not have the strength of Amazons
But we’re not like the uncultured pornai[2]
Ah… for a drachma and a bit of devotion, we’ll sell you a beautiful dream

keiai suru shijin [Sophia] no you na kyouyou wa nai keredo
gaku no nai tada no gaishou [dimii] to wa chigau wa
Aa… motomoto kanashiki dorei no mi to wa ie
ima wa sakihokoru bara koukyuuyuujo [hetaera]

We may not have the refinement of the respected poet Sophia
But we’re not like the uneducated dimii[3]
Ah… though we were once sad slaves
Now we are roses in full bloom–hetaerae

hanahiraki kazekaoru haru o hisagu igai
anata no sore wa ai ja nai!

Besides selling the flowery, breezy springtime of her youth [4]
There’s not much a girl with no family can do
But we don’t want your pity… don’t take us for fools…
What you’ve got isn’t love

(“To, tsuita wa ne.”
“Wao…”
“Koko ga… Ilion?”)

(“Well, here we are.”
“Wow…”
“So this is Ilion?”)

(“Omaera! Sassa to hakobe!
Sassa to hakobe, hakobe! Yasumu n’ja nai!
Sassa to hakoban kai, kora! Eei!”)

(“You! Carry those stones faster!
No lying down on the job!
You’ll be building this wall here until you die!
Carry ’em faster, faster! No time to rest!
Can’t you go any faster? Hey!”)

ishi o hakobu mono kawaita ne ni utare
ishi o sakebu mono chi ni fushite munashiku

Those who carry stones are beaten with a dry sound
Those who cry for a doctor lie lifeless on the ground

Many slaves wore black shadows on their backs…

ishi o tsugeru mono dorei no kae amata
ishi o togeru mono meifu e no touhikou

Those who announce their dying wills are the many replacement slaves
Those who succeed in hanging themselves flee to Hades

Others can’t see the shadow, but the boy is aware of its existence.
He is not even aware of the first time he could notice it, and–
Those who wore that strange dark shadow met a certain death in a short period of time… a certain death.

(“Konna fuu ni, kisamara shinitakunakattara, totto to hataraku n’da!
Oshioki yo!
Ishi o hakonda mono ni dake, shokuji o ataete yaru!
Saa, hatarake! Shinu made hataraku n’da!”)

(“If you don’t want to die, get to work quickly!
Or else you’ll be punished!
Only those who carry stones get to eat!
Go on, work! Work until you die!”)

ai to itsukushimi dake ni dakare sodatta shounen wa
ikari to nikushimi dake o daite ima o taeshinobu

The boy who had grown up embraced by nothing but love and affection
Now survives by embracing nothing but anger and hate

“I’d like to just die already… It’s got to be better than this…”
Repeating this drunken nonsense, he chased after the hope he had lost

sonna makeinu no you ni unmei [Moira] ni kainarasare wa shinai
tatoe dorei ga inu de are
mukubeki kiba wa wasurenai

He won’t let himself be tamed by Moira like an underdog
A slave may be a dog
But he won’t forget he has fangs to bare

The wolf howls at the moon and runs

(“Doko ga ii n’dai? Itte goran.
Koko ka?”)

(“Where would you like it? Tell me.
Here?”)

“MUSUKO YO [Necros]… MOTTO SEI O NIKUMU GA II, IZURE SONO MI WA WAGA MONO TO NARU….”

“My son [Necros]… the more you hate life, the better. After all, your body will one day be mine…”

“Koko na no ka? Hoahaha…”
“Iya da…”
“Hora, hora…”

“Or how about here? Hwahaha…”
“No!”
“Hey, hey…”

“Kuso, itee… ano hentai shinkan, itsuka koroshite yaru.”
“Yo! Busaiku-chan, hidee tsura da na.”
“Fun, hito no koto ieta tsura ka yo…”
“Hehehe, chigenee.”
“Hahaha…”

“Damn, that hurts… I’m gonna kill that pervert priest someday.”
“Hey, Little Miss Ugly, that’s a horrible face you got there!”
“Hmph, you’re one to talk about ugly faces.”
“Hehehe, that’s true!”
“Hahaha…”

hito wa daremo ga
shisubeki unmei [sadame] o seoi
mama… daite dakarete sabishisa o ai de umeru
saredo karera no ooku wa shisubeki unmei [sadame] o noroi
mama… ubai ubaware munashisa de mune o mitasu

Every person
Must shoulder the burden of being destined to die
They hold each other, covering up loneliness with love
But many of them curse that they are destined to die
They steal from each other, filling their hearts with futility

shoujo no hoho o tsutawaru kegarenaki shizuku o
akaguroki shitasaki ga sukuikaketa setsuna

In the instant when his red-brown tongue
Licked away the unsullied tears sliding down the girl’s cheeks…

“Nigasanai yo, koneko-chan.”
“Iyaaa!”
“Ihihihihi…”
“Ya da…”
“Watashi no kawaki o uruoshite kureeee!”
“Iyaaaaa!”
“Uu… aa–!”

“I won’t let you get away, my little kitten.”
“No!”
“Eeheeheehee…”
“Stop it!”
“Quench my thirst!”
“No!”
“Aaaaah!”

「Elef?」
「Misia!」
Misia!」

“Daijoubu kai? Kimi.”
“Elef?”
“Misia!”
“Dare zo oranu kaa?”
“Otte ga kuru mae ni nige yo! Misia!”
“Un!”
“Matte! Matte!”
“Tsukamaru ja nee zo, Elef!”
“Omae koso na, Orion!”

“Are you all right?”
“Elef?”
“Misia!”
“Who’s there?”
“Run, Misia, before anyone comes after us!”
“Okay!”
“Wait! Wait!”
“Don’t get caught, Elef!”
“Don’t you get caught, Orion!”

tsunaida te to te kakenukeru kaze no miyako [Ilion… Ilion…]
furisosogu hoshikuzu yoiyami no kaze no miyako [Ilion… Ilion…]
nageki to shi no jouheki sobietatsu kaze no miyako [Ilion… Ilion…]
furikaeru haigo ni toozakaru kaze no miyako [Ilion… Ilion…]

Hand in hand, they ran from Ilion, Ilion
In the twilight, stardust rained down on Ilion, Ilion
Walls of death and lamentation towered over Ilion, Ilion
They look behind them to see the distant Ilion, Ilion

“Hissatsu! Yumi ga shinarihajiketa honoo yozora o kooraseta uchi!”
“Wazana nagee yo, baka!”
“Damarasshai! Kore zo kyuukyoku kyuujutsu no shinzui!”
“Hahahaha….”

“One-hit kill! ‘The Bow Bends and Springs Back, Releasing a Flame Which Freezes the Night Sky’ Shot!”
“You idiot, that name is way too long!”
“Shut up, you! This is the essence of ultimate archery!”
“Hahahaha…”

Anemos can never forgive those who disgrace god’s domain
The anger fused with Brochi and will conceive Thyella. [5]

Notes:

[1] Hetaerae were high-class courtesans of ancient Greece, similar to the Japanese oiran. Unlike most Greek women outside of Sparta, they were highly educated and could own property and participate in symposia.

[2] Pornai were the lowest class of prostitutes, essentially sex slaves owned by their pimps. Some eventually managed to buy their freedom and became independent prostitutes or even hetaerae, as Melissa and Cassandra seem to have done.

[3] This word seems to be an invented feminine noun form of the ancient Greek adjective meaning “public” or “belonging to the people” (the same word that forms the root of “democracy”). In context, it seems to refer to independent prostitutes, women who were not enslaved like the pornai, but who lacked the extensive education of the hetaerae.

[4] “Haru o hisagu,” or “to sell spring,” is a euphemism for prostitution.

[5] Brochi is the goddess of rain, and Thyella, daughter of Brochi and the wind god Anemos, is fittingly enough the goddess of storms. Neither Brochi nor Thyella appears in Greek mythology.

The words in square brackets are what is sung, where it differs from what is written in the lyrics booklet. The stanzas in parentheses are not in the lyrics booklet and have been transcribed by ear.
