Sound Horizon – Hoshi no Kirei na Yoru

September 2, 2014

Hoshi no Kirei na Yoru – 星の綺麗な夜 – A Beautiful Starry Night

And in the darkness that didn’t have a name…
The story revolving around Halloween and the night… was about to begin quietly…

The people
who forwarded in the dark.
The solitary man was looking at them.

He sang the love song,
or only sounded the lung song.
Oh! And the wind buried it so in vain.

itoshii yo [Diana]… mou ichido… kimi ni aitai to negau

My dear Diana… I want to see you once more
Is this feeling an unforgivable sin?
If I follow that procession of people, will I be able to reach you?

The story of Halloween and the night
The early 19th century
There was an eccentric man who sailed from Great Britain to Ireland
As if to go against a new wave of industrial revolution

ishiku no jiji ga fukikomareta soredemo noufu yorya MASHI na mon darou

He wasn’t a very good stonemason, but he was an even worse farmer
Though he prayed to Heaven and took up his hoe and farmed the land

Only bad luck smiled on him–the potatoes he desperately grew began to rot
And turned into a sludgy black poison
The old man’s grandson, with nowhere else to turn, looked up to Heaven…

The tickets that they got by betting their lives
Were those one-way tickets for their liberty
or for their deaths?

OK! Wowow!
Jesus!

OK! ICHIKA BACHIKA inochi o kaketa bakuchi da Wowow!
norikonda yuresugiru borosugiru netsubyou hobikoru kan’okebune Jesus!

OK! It’s all-or-nothing, a bet they stake their lives on, wowow!
They took a ride on the too-shaky, too-shabby, fever-ridden coffin ship. Jesus!

kibou [yume] o daita mama daini no shuujin [kaeranu hito] to naru…

Holding their hope [dream] in their hearts, they become the Second Prisoners [the people who will not return]…
One out of five of them…
Sees an illusion [dream] while floating on fever…

And they were gone far away…

meihaku na tenmei [manifest destiny]

Manifest Destiny

They dreamed… the country of liberty.

That principle was the cause of  Manifest Destiny.
Of a great number of battlefields.
Like which we sing aloud.

masa ni “PAN no aru tokoro ni sokoku ari”
oshiyoseta imin no mure wa shintenchi ni yume o kaketa
soshite “kami ga ataetamouta unmei” to
henkyou [frontier] o uma to juu de nishigata e to oiyatta…

First they thought “Where there’s bread, there’s our homeland”
The flocks of immigrants staked their dreams on the New World
Then they thought “This is our God-given Manifest Destiny”
And, with their horses and their guns, pushed the frontier to the west…

1846
The Mexican-American war broke out

miharashi no ii oka [Buena Vista] de wa takeru ryuukihei [dragoon]

The fierce dragoons were on the hill with a good view [Buena Vista]
The hands that had dropped their hoes now took up muskets

douhou to shite no ishiki to wa doko ni aru no darou?
— jinshu… shinkou… kokuseki… etc…
imin no otoko [otoko] wa seisho [Bible] yori mo jitsuri aru hibi no kate [PAN] o eranda
soshite… sei PATORIKKU daitai shozoku no douhou [St. Patrick Battalion] karera o uchikoroshita…

Where is the kinship between countrymen?
— Race… faith… ethnicity… etc…
The immigrant men chose their daily bread over the Bible
And then… they were shot dead by their brethren in the St. Patrick Battalion…

1848
The rush for the gold
Yes! Let’s go dig!

douketsu -> hotte mo -> hotte mo -> hotte mo -> KIRI ga nai!

Though they dig, dig, dig the hole, there’s no end!
Ah… this tragic, or maybe happy, sight is a strange situation!
Though they sift, sift, sift desperately, there’s no gold!
Ah… this tragic, pointless, happy world is a savage era!

nekosogi -> horidase -> dainana no shoudou [IDO] wa utau
kinkoumyaku ooban furumai [Gold Rush] da yo! zen’in shuugou! 49-nengumi [forty-niners]!

“Dig it all up thoroughly,” the Seventh Impulse [the id] sings
It’s the Gold Rush! Come, everyone! Forty-niners!

Whenever the era of frenzied uproar
People never ever stop their steps
Even though they had much contradiction
While he was messed around by severe fate
Where would the man drift to?

yowai mono o atsumareba yori yowai mono o tataku
doko made daisan no shin’i ni shitagatte mo [nagarete mo] sabetsu wa aru

If weak people gather, they’ll strike at the weaker ones
Even if you act in accordance with the Third Deeper Meaning [let things flow], there is discrimination

hito wa daremo ga yowaku okubyou dakara me o tojiru
daiku no genjitsu [hontou no sekai] nado mitaku wa nai

Every person is weak, and closes their eyes out of cowardice
They don’t want to see the Ninth Reality [the real world]

Hit by a stray bullet, his knee is crushed
Unable to find honest work, the man who left the military becomes a wandering drunk…

The life
That seemed to be a long but a short story
It attempts to notify the one ending and beginning

itsu shinda tte ii… sou omotte ikite kita…
rurou no otoko [otoko] ni mo hitotsu… kigakari ga atta…
nakenashi no chingin [kane] de… shiokuri wa tsudzuketa–

He thought, “I hope I die soon,” but he kept on living
The wandering man still had one concern
That was the sweet little sister he had left behind in his homeland
He kept on sending her an allowance out of his scant rent money–

tsuki no you ni hohoemu… kidate no ii josei [lady]…
aru hi “yoi houkoku [news] ga aru wa” to… o-hara ni te o atete…
tsuki o heta shukufuku… kuchibiru o kasaneta–

Even a man so concerned with his sister eventually found a lover
A good-natured lady with a smile like the moon
One day she said “I have good news” and laid her hand on her stomach
As the months went on, they were blessed… their lips met–

saredo dairoku no megami [unmei] wa kare o… minogashi wa shinai…
tsuki no nai yoru ni… daiyon no gamen no you ni [haigo kara] sasareta–

But the Sixth Goddess [Fate] had not overlooked him…
On a moonless night, he was stabbed [like the Fourth Screen] from behind–

ima wa mada shinitakunai… honki de sou omotta…
TSUKI no nai bakuchi jinsei [game]… shoubu wa kore kara da to iu no ni…
imawa… tachisatta kage wa… gorotsuki [narazu mono] no yashinka [go-getter]
TSUKIaitai onna… HAMEru tame no tehazu–

“I don’t want to die yet,” he thought with all his heart
Though the outcome of this luckless high-stakes game should be still undecided…
In his dying moment, the shadow of an ambitious scoundrel fled the scene
It was a way to trap the woman he wanted to be with–

Even on such a tragic night… the stars were so beautiful…
There was a distant, innocent laugh…
Ah… today was the eve of All Saints’ Day, Halloween night

kore ga na mo naki shiniyuku otoko [otoko] no… shirarezaru daigo no monogatari [Roman]
SHEIMASU da ka… UIRIAMU da ka…
mou… tooi mukashi no koto sa…

This is the nameless dying man’s Fifth Story
Was it Seamus? Was it William?
It’s already a thing of the distant past…

inori o ikudotonaku sasagete kita keredo kekkyoku… daijuu no ishi [ten no shu] wa mokushita mama…
nantonaku shiawase na daiichi no tsuioku [toki] mo atta keredo kekkyoku… jinsei nante ROKU na mon ja nee…

He offered up countless prayers, but in the end… the Tenth Will [our Lord in Heaven] remained silent
Somehow he also had happy First Memories [times], but in the end… it wasn’t a very good life…

Notes:

The words in square brackets are what is sung, where it differs from what is written in the lyrics booklet.
