Sound Horizon – Meiou (Thanatos)

March 16, 2015

Meiou (Thanatos) – 冥王 (Θανατοζ) – The King of the Dead (Thanatos) [1]

時を運ぶ縦糸―― 命を灯す横糸――
其を統べる紡ぎ手… 其の理を運命と呼ぶならば……

Chronos, the vertical bearer of time. Bios, the horizontal flame of life.
The weaver of the universe uses both strings… if this is the reason we call it destiny….

Notes:

[1] “Meiou” usually refers specifically to the Greco-Roman god Hades/Pluto, but in Moira’s mythology, Thanatos has taken his place as the god of the Underworld, thus the less literal translation of the song’s title. (The Underworld itself seems to still be called Hades, though. Go figure.)

[2] A bit about name meanings: “Elefseus” means “advent,” as in “noteworthy or awaited arrival,” and his nickname, “Elef,” means “free(dom).” Ooh, see what Revo did there. His sister, Artemisia, has a name that literally means “wormwood,” but given the moon and maiden imagery later on, it’s almost certainly a reference to the goddess Artemis (goddess of the moon in actual Greek mythology). Polydeuces is another name for Pollux, who, with his twin brother Castor, became the constellation Gemini in actual Greek mythology; a character named Castor appears later in Moira, but seems to be no relation. Leontius is just a name, which has been borne by a fifth-century theologian and a usurper of the Byzantine throne (do either of these mean anything? Probably not, but you never know). Of course, the word for “lion” is also in there, which is probably more relevant.

All-caps is my usual way of rendering katakana, though it gets a bit overpowering here. I hope it isn’t too annoying.

The words in square brackets are what is sung, where it differs from what is written in the lyrics booklet. The stanzas in parentheses are not in the lyrics booklet and have been transcribed by ear; they may contain errors.
