April 30, 2015

Yoiyami no Uta – 宵闇の唄 – Song of Twilight

Und die siebte Komoedie wird sich wiederholen…

[///]

And the seventh comedy will continue to be replayed…

([sieben] “kono mi o yakitsukusu no wa [sechs] choukai to iu giman no honoo
[fuenf] kono kokoro o yakitsukusu no wa [vier] fukushuu o yobu nikushimi no honoo
[drei] kiga to yami gishin to satsuriku
[zwei] ido no soko ni hisomu ankoku no jidai yo
[eins] kuroki shi no gotoku rensa shite yuke Maerz jigoku ni ochite mo”)

([Seven] “What burns my body up [six] is the deceitful flame called punishment
[Five] What burns my heart up [four] is the hate-filled flame calling for revenge
[Three] Hunger and darkness, fear and slaughter
[Two] O, dark era hidden in the depths of the well
Go forth and spread like the Black Death; Maerz, even if we fall into hell”)

(ah… ah… ah…

(“aa… aa… aa… aishite’ru”)

(“I will still love you”)

[///]

This story is fiction.
However, that does not mean that everything in it is untrue.

[///]

— And now, twilight’s darkness spreads across the land.
A nocturnal revenge tragedy hurries toward its end: the Seventh Horizon, Maerchen[1]

kizukeba ido no soko sora o miagete ita
daite ita kawaii shoujo [Maedchen] kuchi o hiraita

“Who” am I? It’s been left out of my records
That white hair is colored by the twilight
When I came to my senses, I was at the bottom of a well, looking at the sky
The cute girl I was embracing opened her mouth

(“Ufufufu… aishite’ru wa, Meru. Kore de watashi-tachi zutto zuuttoo issho ne! Kyahahaha!”)

(“Hmhmhm… I love you, Meru. Now we can be together forever and eeeever! Kyahahaha!”)

(“fukushuu shiyou ne?”)

(“Let’s get revenge, shall we?”)

“fukushuu shiyou” to kanojo ga sasayaku sono kowairo wa dokoka natsukashiku
nan no tame ka nante dare no tame ka nante omoidasenu mama shoudou ni shitagatta

“Let’s get revenge,” she whispered; the sound of her voice was somehow familiar
So I followed her on impulse, without remembering what or whom I was getting revenge for

My face distorted in pain and my voice cried out in sorrow amidst trembling and regret

aa fukushuu wa tsumi ga yue ni shukushuku to ukeiretamae nageita tokoro de mou teokure sa
tsune ni MORI kara IDO e itaru kigeki no maku wa agatta

Ah, revenge is a sin, so accept it in silence; the time for lament is already past
The curtain has already opened on the comedy leading from the forest to the well[2]

“shichinin no joyuu-tachi [Schauspielerinnen]!”

“The seven actresses!”

(“saa utsukushisugiru shibito-hime ni go-toujou negaou ka?”)

(“Now then, shall we bring on the too-beautiful dead princesses?”)

(Drei Zwei Eins los…!)

[///]

(Three, two, one, go…!)

Now dead, I have many regrets, but it is already too late
Young lady, you are alone, a corpse wandering the night road
The story encountered by chance–ah, that too is destiny
With your small mouth, weave the seven pains into a story before you forget them

(“saa utatte goran… Fraeulein”)

(“Now, sing for me, young lady…”)

《It came… it came… the night came…

It came… it came… the night came…

hakaba kara hajimaru nanatsu no guuwa [Maerchen]
IDO no soko ni hisomu mujun no wana
sakuraku naru gensou o tsumugu

The seven fairytales begin in the graveyard
A cruel trap hidden at the bottom of the well
The writer of the story uses contrived lies
To weave various illusions together

hikari to yami ga orinasu sekai [mozaiku] no naka ni ai to zouo ga afureru

In this mosaic-like world woven of light and darkness, love and hate overflow

nikushimi no honoo wa yureodoru
dareka ni aisareta you na ki mo shita…
↑ aa demo sore wa ki no sei yo ↑

I had the feeling that I once loved someone
Now the flames of hate dance before me
I also had the feeling that someone once loved me
↑ Ah, but that’s just your imagination ↑

kimi ga dareka o uramu nara sono fukushuu ni te o kasou!

If you bear a grudge against somebody, then let me take your revenge!

《Kam… Kam… Die Nacht kam…

(“As if to go against the tide of the Black Death, the melody aimed for the east”)

(Freude, schoener Goetterfunken, Tochter aus Elysium
Wir betreten feuertrunken, Himmlische, dein Heiligtum!
Deine Zauber binden wieder, was die Mode streng geteilt;
Alle Menschen werden Brueder, wo dein sanfter Fluegel weilt.)

We enter, drunk on fire, thy heavenly sanctuary
Thy magic binds together what custom has strongly divided
All men become brothers beneath thy gentle wings)

(Twilight’s darkness spreads across the land.

gekkou ni terasarete kyoukou e habataita senritsu ga karamiau yoru ni

Lit by the moonlight, I took flight toward the crime, on the night when the melodies intertwined

Ah, revenge is a sin, so accept it in silence; the time for lament is already past
If you want to sing your resentment along with the twilight orchestra
Then the corpse conductor is your friend!

(“Now, please be so kind as to die and then come back and try again”)

The fading shadow reaches out its arms, but the darkness is already too deep
Young lady, your light is merely the afterglow of the light of days past
Though you dreamed of Eden in life, ah, it will be forgotten
Before the small river and the red wine dry up, please weave, yes–
The history of your death!

(“Ufufu! I love you, Maer!
Let’s keep on taking revenge together forever and eeeever!
Helping these fools get their revenge will be our revenge!
It will continue for eternity!
Because humans can’t live without hating each other!
Aahahahaha…!”)

Notes:

As per usual, what is in square brackets is what is sung where it differs from what is written, and stanzas in parentheses are transcribed by ear.

Speaking of which, the German in this album is not always very good (or even comprehensible), so when there’s a Japanese gloss in the official lyrics, I’m relying on that for the translation, even though it may differ considerably from the spoken German.

[1] “Maerchen” is German for “fairytale.” (“Maerz,” by the way, means “March,” as in the month, but I don’t know if that has any significance.)

[2] “Ido,” meaning “well,” is written phonetically in many places throughout this album (wherever it’s in all-caps) in order to doubly reference the Freudian psychological concept of the id, the part of a person’s psyche driven by instinct, emotion, and base desires (like, say, the desire for revenge). In a healthy individual, according to Freud, the id is tempered by the superego (the part of the psyche driven by morals and ideals) and the ego (the more practical, reasonable part that mediates between the two), but in falling to the bottom of the well, the song implies, Maerz has become driven entirely by id, and is now lost to reason and morals.

[3] This nonverbal noise is written out with kanji meaning, in order: armor, disease, frog, meeting, grief, existence, meeting [different kanji], certain [in the sense of “a certain someone”], I, meeting [yet a third kanji], exist [different kanji], muteness, meeting [fourth kanji!], beauty, and whitewash. Isn’t Japanese great? I’m pretty sure Revo is just messing with me now.

[4] Elise the doll’s vocals are provided by the Vocaloid Hatsune Miku, whose voice bank was made with samples from voice actress Fujita Saki, who also played the younger Elisabeth (a character who will appear later in this album) in the single Ido e Itaru Mori e Itaru Ido. This strengthens the connection suggested by their similar names.

(Original lyrics by Revo.)
