Kuroki Okami no Yado – 黒き女将の宿 – The Dark Landlady’s Inn[1]

Geiz

[///]

Greed

(“yoiyami no kaze ni yureru yukai na kuroi buranko”)

(“A happy black swing sways in the twilight breeze”)

Buran. Buran. Kaze fukya buran. Odoru yo, kuroi buranko…

It swings. It swings. When the wind blows, it swings. The black swing is dancing…

(“kimi wa naze kono kyoukai o koete shimatta no ka?
saa utatte goran…”)

(“How did you come to cross this boundary?
… Now, sing for me.”)

I were born in a real poor village, and my belly were always empty[2]
Would’ve been nice if there was a house made of sweets around

“hido wa sungou ni yotte nomi suguwareru” do

“Folk can only be saved by their faith”

erai bousan ga idda do sa hon dde iu no ni gaida do sa
kamisama ga tasugede gureru nara tarafugu omanma kueppe na

A great monk told me that–said it were written in one of his books
God willing, maybe one day I’ll be able to eat my fill

sono hi no sora no iro kanasuu hodo ni agagu…

My pa and the others went out with sickles in their hands
The sky that day were a sad shade of red…

(“minna, iku do!”
“Geefenbauaa-shougun ni, tsuzuke-!”)

(“Everyone, let’s go!”
“Follow General Geffenbauer!”)

taihou ga hoerya tsubasa mo nai no ni
hito ga sora o tobu karuyaka ni takaku
sensou to wa na bakari no tada no satsuriku sa

When the cannons roar, though they have no wings
People fly into the sky as if they weigh nothing
War is slaughter by another name

aa buki ga nougu ja zannen da keredo
shatei ga mijikasugita zankoku na hodo ni
sensou to wa na bakari no tada no satsuriku sa

Ah, farm tools for weapons, though it’s a shame
Don’t have much range, so much that it’s cruel
War is slaughter by another name

mura no hatarakite wa kekkyoku sono hotondo ga nidoto wa kaette konakatta…

Most of the men of the village never returned home…

“sosude ora wa toogu no mazu e do urareda”

“And then I were sold off to a distant village.”

“Von unbekannten Alter und Geschlecht. Begegnen verheissen Pech.
an Leben ist mehr schlecht als recht.
Der Gasthof der Wirtin Kurogitsunetei!”

“Age unknown. Sex unknown. Even when you meet her, you can’t tell. One of life’s casualties.
This suspicious landlady gets up to shady business nightly
At her Black Fox Inn!”

“tou ga tatte hisashii, KUSOBABAA ga hitori.

“I’m just a lonely old maid who’s past her prime.
But living a shameless life isn’t just for the pretty!”

“aishita otoko wa mina hakanaku chitta.
un ga warui no ka, jidai ga warui no ka…”

“All the men I’ve loved have already passed on.
Is it my bad luck, or are we living in bad times…?”

【Sickingen】

“aa Muentzer wa kedakaku Hutten wa karei de,
Sickingen wa aa dare yori mo hageshikatta wa ♡”

“Ah, Muentzer was noble, Hutten was splendid,
And Sickingen, ah, he was more passionate than anyone else…♡”

“oi KUSOBABAA”

“Hey, old hag!”

“anta no you na inakappe, hirotte yatta no wa, doko no dare kashira?
kuchi no kikikata nya ki o tsukenasai!”

“Who was the one who took in a country bumpkin like you?
Watch your tongue when you speak to me!”

“saasa danna douzo. nurui bakushu [Bier] wa ikaga?” (“umee da yo!”)
“zuman no saikou na kanzou ryouri [gute Leber Kochen] go-youi idasumashou”

“Now, then, sir, how about a warm beer?” (“It’s real good!”)
“We’ll fix you up some of our famous liver dish!”

yoiyami e tobidasuda ogami o nirami
kyagu wa igari ora wa hiraayamari

The landlady ran out into the twilight, and the customer glared after her
He got real mad, and I had to apologize

soshite koichijikango…

Then, after nearly an hour…

kuugi yomazu demodotta ogami no te ni wa
shoguzai no sunsen na shoguzai

Having made things awkward, the landlady came back
In her hand she had an ingredient of atonement

sono azu ni igarigurutta gyagu mo kigen o naosuda
sono godo de azu o sumeda ogami no bousou wa tsudzugu…

Soon as he tasted it, the angry guest calmed right down
Encouraged by this, the landlady continued her rampage…

(“shitai ga nai nara tsukureba ii ja nai?
ora mou iya da mazushii no wa himojii no wa
anna mizume na omoi wa mou iyaaaaa!”)

(“If there aren’t any dead bodies, I’ll just have to make my own, won’t I?
I’m tired of being poor and hungry…
I’ve had enough of feeling miserable!”)

kekkyogu zunsee tte nan dabe… yogu wagannee…

I fought to live, but it weren’t no good.
In the end, I don’t even know… what life is…

sore ga jijitsu de are kyokou de are
torareta mono wa torikaesu mono sa
saa fukushuugeki o hajimeyou ka!”)

(“I see, so that’s why you were hanged, is it?
It’s a shame, but there is an unremembered sin in your body.
Whether your story is truth or fiction
We’ll return what has been taken from you.
Now then, shall we begin the revenge tragedy?”)

tonton tonton tobira o tonton
tonton tonton tobira o tonton
tonton tonton tobira o tonton
odoru yo kuroi…

Knock knock knock knock, knock on the door
Knock knock knock knock, knock on the door
Knock knock knock knock, knock on the door
The black swing–

(“ora no kanzou o kaeseee…”)

(“Give me back my liveeeeer…”)

… is dancing!

(“gyaaaaaaaaaa…!”)

(“Aaaaaaaah!”)

(“Raku shite moukeyou to shite mo nakanaka umaku ikanai mono da nee”
“Anna zusan na keikaku umaku iku hou ga okashii no yo. ufufufufu!”)

(“Her get-rich-quick scheme didn’t work out so well for her, did it?”
“It would be stranger if such a shoddy plan had worked out. Ufufufufu!”)

Notes:

[1] The Grimm fairytale on which this is based is The Man from the Gallows. Though this fragmentary story isn’t very well-known, it’s part of a family of folktales about corpses demanding bits of themselves back. A variation you may be more familiar with is The Teeny-Tiny Woman, about a little old lady who takes a bone from a graveyard to make soup with (gross) and is haunted by a spirit demanding, “Give me back my bone!” For some reason, that one’s a popular choice for children’s picture books.

[2] This song’s narrator speaks/sings in Tohoku-ben, considered a kind of country-bumpkinish dialect.
