Bara no Tou de Nemuru Himegimi – 薔薇の塔で眠る姫君 – The Princess Sleeping in the Rose Tower[1]

Hochmut

[///]

Pride

(“noroi to iwai no kyoukai otome ga ochita yami fukai madoromi no naka
bara no tou nemuru himegimi kimi wa naze kono kyoukai o koete shimatta no ka?
saa utatte goran…”)

(“The maiden fell into the darkness between curses and blessings, into a deep slumber
Princess sleeping in the rose tower, how did you come to cross this boundary?
Now, sing for me…”)

madoromi no mori ni odoru hyaku no kodoku to
tsukikage ni chou wa kuchite shi no yume o miru

Dancing with a hundred kinds of loneliness in the forest of slumber
The butterfly decays in the moonlight, dreaming of death

mizu abita kisaki [haha] ga kiita no wa migomori tsugeshi kawazu no koe

ougon no sara ga ichimai tarizu ni jiken wa okotte shimatta…

While bathing in the water, my mother the Queen heard a frog telling her she would become with child
“The child you wish for will be born to you before the year is out”
Overjoyed, my father celebrated my birth with a banquet
But because there was one golden plate too few, this came to pass…

The reason the maiden who died without knowing love
Sleeps embraced by roses…

“kunijuu ni chirabaru jinzuuriki o motsu kenjo-tachi o subete maneite okinagara
watashi dake manekanu gouman naru ou yo iwai no enseki ni noroi o soete yarou!
hime ga daku unmei wazuka yomei juugonen
tsumu ni sasarete yuka ni taorete shinu ga ii!”

“Oh, proud king, when you invited all the wisewomen in the kingdom
You failed to invite me alone, so I will add a curse to the blessings!
The princess shall live for only fifteen years
And then she shall prick her finger on a spindle and fall down dead!”

“iie, juusanninme no kenjo [Alte Rose] yo. fukitsu na kotonoha shirizokeyou
hyakunen shinda to misete , shindai no ue, tada, nemuru dake!”

“No, thirteeth wisewoman Alte Rose. I will reverse your ill-omened words.[2]
She shall lie as if dead for a hundred years, but she shall merely sleep!”

“naraba dochira no chikara ga uwamawatte iru ka, aa, nagaru toki no mi zo shiru…”

“In that case, I wonder which of us is more powerful? Ah, only time will tell…”

“juugonengo ga tanoshimi da ne, Aprikose?”
“dou kashira?”
“ohohohohohoho!”

“I look forward to fifteen years from now, don’t you, Aprikose?”
“I wonder how it will turn out?”
“Ohohohohohoho!”

asa to yoru wa kurikaesu.
nozomou to mo, nozomazarou to mo.
yowai juugo no asa o mukaeru koto to natta, sonna watashi ga…

Mornings and evenings cycle around,
Whether one wishes it or not.
Time flies like an arrow, and even the biggest trees add to their rings.
The reason why I, approaching the morning of my fifteenth birthday,

nana no zaika [Siebte Schuld]
nobara ni dakarete nemuru wake wa…

[The seventh sin]
Sleep embraced by roses…

“DOKIDOKI da wa…”

“I’m so excited…”

shokudai no yureru hikari honogurai yami o terasu
ishikabe no heya o mawari furui tou e agaru
semai rasenkei [neji] no kaidan o noboru to
heya no naka hitori rouba ga asa o tsumuide ita

The flickering candle flame dimly illuminated the darkness
Following the stone walls around, I climbed the old tower
When I reached the top of the narrow spiral staircase
In the room was a lone old woman, spinning

“konnichiwa obaa-san koko de nani shite’ru no?”
“ito o totte orimasu no ja”
“jaa sore naani? omoshirosou ni guruguru hanemawatte’ru mono?
(“a! nani… nnn…”)

“Good day, old woman. What are you doing there?”
“I’m spinning thread.”
“And what is that thing spinning about so merrily?
(“Ah! What… ngh…”)

mezame e to itaru kuchizuke ga hoshii no kai?
daga zannen nagara watashi wa kimi no ouji-sama ja nai
saa mou shibashi. unmei no aite wa yume no sekai de matsu mono sa)

(“I see, so that is why you were embraced by roses.
Do you want a kiss to awaken you?
But unfortunately I am not your prince.
Now, just a little longer. Your fated partner is waiting in the world of dreams.”)

boku no risou no hanayome wa doko ni iru no darou?
aa nishi mo higashi mo kita mo minami mo ame ni mo makezu kaze ni mo makezu
sagashita keredo mitsukaranai… to omotte’ta yasaki ni
subarashii uwasa o kiita–

Where, oh where, is my ideal bride?
Ah, I have searched from west to east, from north to south, through the rain and wind
Yet still I cannot find her… Just when I was thinking that
I heard an incredible rumor–[3]

~nobara no ikegaki ni idakareta hakua no shiro
sora o nozomu bara no tou nemuru utsukushii himegimi~

~In a white castle embraced by a thicket of roses,
In a rose tower that longs for the sky, a beautiful princess sleeps~

aa tada nobara-hime no iitsutae o kiita dake de unmei kanjita
kanojo koso ga kitto boku no {sagashimotomete ita josei} [Elyse] na no darou
naraba donna konnan mo norikoete miseyou!

Ah, as soon as I heard about Princess Briar Rose, I felt it was destiny
She must surely be the woman I’ve been searching for, my Elyse[4]
So I’ll overcome all obstacles to get to her!

mayoi no mori no kiri ga harete yuku
boku o izanatte kureru no ka? itoshii hime no moto e
toge no ikegaki ga kuchi o akete yuku
boku o michibiite kureru no ka? itoshii kanojo no moto e to

As I wander in the forest, the fog begins to lift
Is it beckoning me to the side of my beloved princess?
The thicket of thorns opens its mouth
Is it leading me to the side of my beloved lady?

shokudai no yureru hikari madoronda yami o terasu
ishikabe no heya o tobashi furui tou e agaru
semai neji no kaidan o noboru to
heya no naka hitori otome ga yokotawatte ita

The flickering candle flame illuminated the slumbering darkness
Flying through the stone-walled rooms, I climbed the old tower
When I reached the top of the narrow spiral staircase
In the room was a lone maiden, lying on her side

When the princess was woken by the kiss of her perfect prince,
The roses, having played their part, withered away on the spot,
And the happy people of the castle, who had indulged in a too-long nap,
Happily resumed their daily routine as if nothing had happened.

nana no zaika [Siebte Schuld]
kedakaki oujo o norou nante gouman na no wa omae no hou yo

[The seventh sin]
Really, cursing a noble queen… the one who’s too proud here is you!

(“dare zo Alte Rose o toraeyo!” “ha!”
“mou nido to kono kuni no tsuchi wa fumenu mono to omoe!”
“nobara-hime yo! wasureruna okimiyage ni mou hitotsu noroi o kurete yarou!”)

(“Somebody, seize Alte Rose!” “Yes!”
“Never think to set foot in this kingdom again!”
“Princess Briar Rose! I’ll leave you a parting gift, one more curse to remember me by!”)

–And she made it so that
The newborn princess would be abandoned in the woods…[5]

(“are wa koronde mo tada ja okinai onna ne”
“ara touzen yo!”)

(“Now, there’s a woman who can turn any situation to her advantage.”
“A lady whose pride has been wounded is a terrifying sight, isn’t she?”
“Naturally!”)

Notes:

[1] Sleeping Beauty, naturally.

[2] Alte Rose translates to Old Rose, a name which may be familiar to Sound Horizon fans.

[3] There’s speculation that this prince and Snow White’s prince are the same person, since they have the same voice actor and say some of the same things, but this one doesn’t seem to be a necrophiliac or to already have a wife. (Maybe they’re brothers?)

[4] Another Elysion reference here.

[5] The obvious conclusion is that this princess (never again mentioned in Maerchen) is Lafrenze, but one wonders how she gets from pseudo-Medieval Germany to pseudo-Ancient Greece…
