Takkei no Seijo – 磔刑の聖女 – The Crucified Saint[1]

Zorn

[///]

Wrath

(“sankei no todaeta Kirche tabiaruki no Geigenspieler
mizou to natta haritsuke no seijo.
kimi wa naze kono kyoukai o koete shimatta no ka?
saa utatte goran…”)

(“A church with no worshippers. A travelling fiddler.
A statue of a crucified saint.
How did you come to cross this boundary?
Now, sing for me…”)

(Es kam! Zeit des schicksals. Es kam! Zeit des Versprechens.)

(It’s here! The time of destiny. It’s here! The time of promise.)

(“saa o-chichiue ga o-machi desu”)

(“Come, your lord father awaits.”)

nibiiro no ashidori ketsui de susumeru
senaka ni kaze o kanjite ichido dake furikaeru

With feet like lead, I go to my fate
Feeling the wind at my back, I turn around only once

yoiyami no nioi wa fushigi to natsukashiku
senaka o oshite kureru sou sonna ki sae shita wa

The scent of twilight is strangely nostalgic
I feel as though it’s giving me strength

(aa utsuro na mama utsurou mama ibitsu na aa tsumi o atsume seppun [kuchizuke])

Alone in the face of approaching sadness, my trembling fingers trace a far distant promise
At the end of the fleetingly warped time in which hate wells up, I gaze into the dark and give it a kiss
(Ah, empty and fading, I gather warped sins and give them a kiss)

ima demo wasurerarenai
(ima nao omoidasenai)

Even now I can’t forget it
(Even now I can’t remember it)

(“denka, ojou-sama o o-tsure itashimashita”
“fumu, Elisabeth, yorokobe! omae no kekkon aite ga kimatta zo!
“o-kotoba desu ga onii-sama”
“otou-sama to yobe to nando ittara wakaru n’da?”

(“Your Highness, I have brought the young lady.”
“Rejoice, Elisabeth! Your bridegroom has been decided!
You have had an offer of marriage from Rhein Pfalz. He’s a better match than we could have hoped for at your age, don’t you think?”
“My dear brother, if I could just have a word…”
“How many times must I tell you to call me Father?”
“No, my brother, I have no wish to be married to anyone!”)

ai o itsuwatte ikiru kurai nara
shinjitsu to tomo ni shisu koto mo itowanai wa

If I must lie about love in order to live
Then I would not mind dying along with the truth

futari de mitsuketa nobara ga
kimi o tsutsumu koto o negatte bohyou no mawari ni ueta kedo
kekkyoku tsui no tsui made saku koto wa nakatta ne

I wanted the roses we found together
To wrap around you, so I planted them around your grave
But in the end they didn’t bloom…

gekkou ni koi o shita torikago no shiroi tori wa
chi ni ochiru to shirinagara saigo made habataku yo
dakara koso yoiyami ni utau no wa urami no uta ja nai wa

The caged white bird who fell in love with the moonlight
Keeps flying until the end, even as she knows she will one day fall to the earth
And so the song I sing in the twilight is not a song of resentment

(“Walter, omae to hahaue ga mibun o itsuwatte made mamorou to shita mono no kekka ga kore da”
“denka…”
“kono baka musume o haritsuke ni shiro”
“denka!”)

(“Walter, see what’s become of this girl that you and my lady mother lied about your rank to protect!”
“Your Highness…”
“Crucify this foolish girl!”
“Your Highness!”)

hatashite kare wa kimi no shi to hikikaete made hontou ni sore o nozomu no ka na?
maa ii. saa fukushuugeki o hajimeyou ka”)

(“I see, so that is why you have been crucified.
It’s admirable to adhere to your honest feelings,
But would the man you love really have wanted you to do so if it meant your death?
Well, never mind. Now, then, shall we begin the revenge tragedy?”)

(“iie. watashi wa sonna koto o nozonde nado inai wa
hito ni wa sorezore seou beki tachiba to unmei ga aru

(“No. I have no desire for such a thing.
Each person has their own position and their own destiny to bear.
You came to meet me; that is enough for me.
Do you really not remember even those beautiful days?”)

“Un.”
“Kirei na o-hana.”
“Waa, hontou.”
“Tsukete ageru yo.”
“Hontou? Kawaiku shite ne.”
“Niau yo.”
“Hontou?”
“Meru zettai, zettai mukae ni kite ne!”
“Aa, yakusoku sa”)

(“I’m quite excited.
Because the forest–no, the world is so big!”
“Yes.”
“What beautiful flowers!”
“Wow, you’re right.”
“I’ll put some on you.”
“Really? Make me cute, all right?”
“They look good on you.”
“Really?”
“Maer, you should definitely, definitely come to meet me again!”
“Yes, it’s a promise.”)

(“Meru, sonna ni natte made, yakusoku o mamotte kureta no ne”)

(“Maer, despite the way things turned out, you kept your promise.”)

honoo [hikari] o nakushita kimi o shibaru tsumetai kusari wa
(“oo seijo-sama!”
“makoto de atta ka. kore naraba sonata no tsumi o…”)
ai [hikari] o nakushita kimi o omou futari no aizou
tori wa sora e shitai wa tsuchi e setsuri [kami] o uragiritsudzuketa
yoru wa akete owari no asa e tsugi no betsuri [wakare] koso eien

The cold chains that bind you, who have lost the light of the fire
(“Oh, saint!”
“So you were telling the truth. In that case, your crime…”)
Are the love and hate between me and you, who have lost the light of love
The birds take to the sky, the corpses to the earth, continually deceiving the will of God
The night ends, the last morning begins; our next parting will be forever

でも…

demo…

But…

koukai nado shite inai wa aa kore ga watashi no jinsei
{monbatsu kizoku no reijou} von Wettin demo {shichi senteikou no sokujo} [von Sachsen] demo nai wa
watashi wa {hitori no onna} [Elisabeth]
tada kimi dake o aishita–

I have no regrets; this was my life
I am neither a von Wettin, daughter of a noble lineage, nor a von Sachsen, daughter of the seventh elector[2]
I am my own woman, Elisabeth
Who loved only you–

唯の【Elisabeth】

tada no Elisabeth

I am simply Elisabeth

(“What is it, Maer? You’ve been acting weird, what’s wrong?
Don’t take what that woman said seriously! Forget it already!
We have to keep taking our revenge. No matter what.
That’s our raison d’etre, right?!
Do you understand? Maer…
Aaaaah! Come on! Why don’t you understand? Maer, you dummy!
Aren’t I your only Elise now!?
Haven’t we had fun up to now?
Haven’t we helped so many people take revenge together?
I’m sure we’ll keep having fun from now on. That’s right, it’s decided.
I’m part of you, and you’re part of me!
Let’s keep going on as we have! Let’s be together forever! Come on!!
Let’s stay like this forever and ever and ever and ever!!
Until the world ends, no, even after the world ends,
Let’s be together forever and ever! Please, no, no, Maer,
No, no no no! Please, please, Maer… noooooooo!!!”)

(“mou, ii n’da yo. Elise.”)

(“That’s enough, Elise.”)

Notes:

[1] This is a fun one–the fairytale this is based on is Saint Solicitous, or Saint Kummernis, the story of a Christian maiden whose father tries to force her to marry a heathen, so God saves her from this fate by making her grow a beard, causing the heathen to withdraw his offer. The girl’s father is so angry that he crucifies her, and she becomes a saint. It’s an unusual little bit of folklore mixed with religious belief; the saint, also known as Wilgefortis, had her own feast day and everything, though modern Catholics seem to regard her existence as apocryphal. A handful of people may be familiar with her story by way of the comic Castle Waiting (recommended for anyone who enjoys stories that weave together various fairytales).

[2] i.e., of the Holy Roman Empire
