Sound Horizon – Namida de wa Kesenai Honoo

Namida de wa Kesenai Honoo – 涙では消せない焔 – A Flame That Can’t Be Quenched With Tears[1]

[///]

(Since the {fifth archive}, {what is known as my consciousness} has been linked to that horizon…

In the land where [she] dwelt, there existed an odd custom of putting twin dolls in the coffin of a dead child. Who is it that gave birth to that? In this horizon, there are many fluctuations in the seed, so difficulty accompanies the observation. The woman had the experience of giving birth, but it was the sad {story} known as a stillbirth…

The conclusion of this tragedy is a factor that can be moved to the right or left. I tried denying her ad921d60486366258809553a3db49a4a…

Now, then. Is the cat in the box alive? Or dead? Let’s try peeking into the cage–)

(What does the sadness really tell among life and death?
The unknown lady who sings across the horizons and links to Roman. She is the Nein.)

karisome no {honoo} [hikari] ga terashita kono {mazushii teihen kurashi} [seikatsu] wa

In this impoverished existence lit by a meager flame
Giving up children was common, but it didn’t make things any better

“{kyuutaisei} [Ancien Régime] nagitaosu kouzui yo kitare!”

The world that our conflict led to, the unavoidable last resort, was–
“Let the floods come and sweep away the Ancien Régime!”

The chains of the ruling power had long been rotting away in the capital
And by the power of the people, with our own hands we felled the emperor…

As our history shakes this linked world
(Which is just one of infinite parallel worlds that cannot be comprehended by an intelligence which can’t recognize the boundaries between the horizons)
Where are we going to?

The light of the multitude of stardust shone in the repeating nights
But the story handed down, the path linking us to our descendants, fell into purple gloom…

umareru jidai ga chigaeba? umareru jibun ga chigaeba?
ikikata no sentaku ga hoka ni yurusareta deshou ka?

If I had been born in a different time? If I had been born a different person?
Would my choices of how to live be approved by others then?

jiyuu to byoudou o kakage {dantoudai} [guillotine] wa chi o susuritsudzukeru

Driven by freedom and equality, the guillotine continues to drink blood
How long will this flow, this wave of time, continue?

In the gap between life and death, a flame burns…

The enemy can’t stop quickly, so the artillerymen will be waiting and fire on the count of three

The alliance of great powers, afraid of stray sparks from this fire, came to put it out
And then the Holy Flemish Empire was overthrown[2]
And a new ruler, a hero, rose to power…

“My, is that the choice you’ve made this time?

Pretending not to be worried, I saw off that beloved form heading to the battlefield
My true feelings scattered in the sunset that was so red that it hurt
In a tone of voice that said she saw through me, the girl whispered…

(“Ne pas crier, Madame”)

(“Don’t cry, Madame”)

In my right arm was the Violet Princess, Violette…[3]
The princess who smiles at the life that comes around
In my left arm was the Hydrangea Princess, Hortense…
The princess who weeps for the pain of death that goes around

“ara, gyaku datta kashira?

“Ah, is that backwards?
Well, never mind, I’ll leave it up to your discretion.
If you’re lonely, I’ll lend you these girls.
Be sure to give them back to me the next time we meet, all right?♪”

When I talked to the girls, a strangely nostalgic feeling came over me
Why was it? It was as if a dream from my childhood was being revived…

Ah… I, abandoned by my parents, still dreamed of love
“I’ll become the kindest, most indulgent mother in the world”
That’s…. what I thought, but…

Ah… however, in reality, I was denied the chance to give birth to a child
“I’ll become the cutest, most doting mother in the world”
That’s… what I thought, but…

tsuki ga taiyou ni kawaru made, yukkuri to hanashiatta…”

“When the dolls I’d begun to make by imitating others took shape,
My husband, whom I’d been waiting impatiently for, returned from the front in a wheelchair.
Until the moon was replaced by the sun, we talked at length
About the time we’d been apart, and what we’d do from now on…”

kono {jidai} [kuni] ni kono {daiku no genjitsu} [jidai] ni umarete kuru koto ga
hatashite shiawase na no ka kangaeru hodo wakaranaku natte’ta no…

The more I thought it over, the more I wasn’t sure
Whether being born in this era and country, this Ninth Reality, would result in happiness…

Then, someday, you can be born…

honoo wa mawaru

The flame turns

(The choice of bearing, the choice of not bearing.
The choice of being born, the choice of not being born.
If there is a flame, ever extinguished by tears, the future is in the hands of the Laurants.)

Notes:

[1] Based on Roman (specifically the frame story regarding Hiver’s mother).

[2] The existence of the Holy Flemish Empire places Roman in the same alternate history as Chronicle/Chronicle 2nd (see Bara no Kishidan).

[3] cf Asa to Yoru no Roman

[4] cf Tasogare no Savant

[5] cf Honoo

(Original lyrics by Revo.)

  1. Isn’t the correct title for this song is 涙では消せない焔 (Namida de wa Kesenai Honoo?)

Also you forget the to in “yukkuri (to) hanashiatta”

As always, thank you for your translation!

    • Oh, duh, of course. The way I have it isn’t even grammatically correct. But particles are such little things, sometimes your brain just skips over them… or mine does, anyway.

  2. Oh yeah, maybe you haven’t find/insert it at the footnote yet, but there’s a lot of reference from Roman songs, like Asa to Yoru no Roman (dolls’ introduction), Honoo (yorokobi ni yureta…), and also Tasogare no Savant (kimi ga kita asa…). Hope that helps!

    • Yeah, I noticed those and checked against my older translations to make sure the wording in this one was consistent with what I used before, but I’ve been a little haphazard with my footnoting.
