Shijin Ballad no Higeki – 詩人バラッドの悲劇 – The Tragedy of Ballad the Poet

saigo no uta…
sore wa amari ni mo subarashiku
hei wa machi no koibito ni utatte oshieta
yagate sono uta wa hito kara hito e to tsutawari
dare ga tsudzutta kamo wakaranu
sono na mo naki uta wa
tairiku-juu ni hiromatta…

The last song…
It was too splendid
The soldiers taught it to their lovers in the town
And soon the song was passed from person to person
No one knew who had composed it
But that nameless song
Spread across the continent…

tsuyoku utsukushiki toki no joou
zettaiteki na kenryoku no mae ni daremo ga hizamadzuku
kitaru joou no tanjoubi
sono bibou o tataeru uta o sasageyo to hitori no shijin ni meijita…

A strong and beautiful queen
Anyone would kneel before her absolute power
When her birthday approached
She ordered a poet to compose a song in praise of her beauty…

joou wa tou…
“kono yo de ichiban utsukushii no wa dare ja?”

The queen asked…
“Who is the most beautiful in this world?”

… But he didn’t give in
“In my world, Your Majesty is the second most beautiful person…”

“karete shimatta hana no utsukushisa…
sore wa, tsuioku to iu na no gen’ei

“The beauty of a flower that has wilted…
Is the illusion called reminiscence
Even a proud, beautiful rose
In a garden that will go on blooming forever without wilting
Can never live up to the flower that has wilted…”

sono uta ni joou wa gekkou shita
“sonata, yo ni karete shimae to mousu no ka!?”
saishou no aizu hitotsu de hei-tachi wa shijin o torikonda…

Hearing his song, the queen flew into a rage
“Are you saying that I’ve already wilted!?”
At a single gesture from the Prime Minister, the soldiers captured the poet…

tensai to utawareshi shijin…
kare no na wa BARADDO
ima wa tsumetai chikarou no sumi
saigo no uta o tsudzutte iru…

The poet extolled as a genius…
His name is Ballad
Now, in a corner of a cold dungeon,
He is composing his last song…

shokei no toki ga chikadzuki
mune ni bara no monshou o kakaeta
rouban no hei wa kiite shimatta
kare no tsudzutta saigo no uta o…

The hour of the execution drew near
The soldiers bearing the crest of the rose on their chests,
Who were guarding the dungeon,
Heard his last song…

saigo no kane ga nariowari
shokei wa ogosoka ni toriokonawareru
saigo no shunkan omoidasu no wa…
kokyou no sora kaze no nioi
ima wa naki kanojo to sugoshita hibi… tsumetai akikaze ga fuyu o michibiku you ni
tabi no musume ga hitotsu omoibito o tazunete sasurau
dokoka natsukashii sono uta o kuchizusaminagara…
~Page 168 “Shijin Ballad no Higeki”

When the final bell tolled
The execution was solemnly carried out
In his last moment, he remembered…
The sky of his hometown, the scent of the wind
And the days he had spent with his late love… as if the cold autumn wind were beckoning winter
A single lady traveller wandered in search of the person from her memories
While humming that song that sounded strangely familiar…
