mou ii yo

I’m ready!

madoite moguru utsusomi yo nanji nani o osoreru ka
aogite kitaru marebito yo nanji nani o osoreru ka

Oh, mortal who hides and hesitates, what are you afraid of?
Oh, traveller from afar who has been gazing at the sky, what are you afraid of?

Put decorations on that precious girl
Whether we meet or not, in the rot of dreams
Pulling on the scarlet and the secret color, at the end of it…

doko e (koko ni) doko e (koko ni) yubikiri shimashou

Where? (Here) Where? (Here) Let’s make a pinky-promise

yoiyoi yofuke ni kokai no utage
yoiyoi yoin ni hane no sakazuki
yoiyoi issei to kakurenbo

Every night, late at night, there’s a banquet beneath the arch
Drunkenly, a feather saké cup for the descendants
Good, good, a once-in-a-lifetime game of hide-and-seek

doko e (koko ni) doko e (koko ni) te no naru hou e

Where? (Here) Where? (Here) Toward the sound of clapping hands

maada da yo

Not yet

otte mo otte mo sameyaranu
utte mo utte mo kieyaranu (osorete kizame dakudaku to)
oni no men (oni no men)

However much you break, you can’t wake up
However much you shoot it, it won’t disappear (Be a good girl and remember this fear)
Even if you die, right on your heels is (Hiding in the katashiro is[3])
The oni mask[4]

“mou ii kai”

“Ready or not?”

At dawn the noble lady falls; stuff a ninety-nine-year truth into her body
As the celebrated destiny rings out, cut off the pledged sleeve

kazashite kitaru utsusomi yo konata nani o temaneite
kazashi shite moguru marebito yo konata nani o shizumu
kakure kakure hako no naka mada mada aku koto nashi (mawaritsudzuku you sugarishi hate wa musubare)
nozoki nozoki yumemi mada mada aku koto nashi (tagai tagai kyouzuru himegoto wa kuranda)
mada mada kazoe no tochuu (kakuretaru warabeuta)
hima ni tsugu (hima ni tsugu)
kakurenbo

Oh, mortal who has come hiding your face, what are you inviting in?
Oh, traveller from afar who hides with a flower in your hair, what are you submerging?
Inside a hidden box–we haven’t tired of it yet, not yet (So as to keep going, bind when clinging is done)
Glimpses of a dream–your eyes won’t open yet, not yet (As we entertain each other, the secret has grown dark)
We’re not done counting yet, not yet (a hidden children’s song)
To pass the idle time (to pass the idle time)
Hide-and-seek

mou ii kai maada da yo
mou ii kai maada da yo
mou ii kai maada da yo

Ready or not? Not yet
Ready or not? Not yet
Ready or not? Not yet

miitsuketa

Found you!

Notes:

[1] In the Japanese form of hide-and-seek, rather than just announcing “Ready or not, here I come,” the person who’s “it” asks whether the other players are ready (“Mou ii kai?”). If they’re not, they say “mada da yo” (not yet), and if they are they say “mou ii yo” (I’m ready). References to this show up throughout the song.

[2] “Te no naru hou e” is part of a chant that accompanies the game “Mekakushi-Oni” (“blindfolded oni”), a tag variant where the person who’s “it,” or “oni,” is blindfolded and has to find the other players based on hearing. Like the similar Anglophone game blind man’s buff, the game is played less in modern times, perhaps because of the potential for accidents when blindfolded children are running around. However, the chant still enjoys a full life of being referenced in pop culture in order to be spooky–sort of like the tendency of English-language horror to take nursery rhymes and make them sound ominous, but with somewhat more justification since an oni (a type of monster in Japanese folklore) is already involved.

[3] Katashiro are dolls used in Shinto rites of self-purification. In more supernatural contexts, they usually protect people from evil beings rather than being possessed by them.

[4] This could also mean “the oni’s face,” but many people would probably think of masks first, as masks of an oni’s face (usually red with tusks/fangs and horns) appear in a variety of contexts in Japanese culture.
