Jin feat. IA – Shinigami Record

September 15, 2020

sonzai no imi o kangaeta
hitoribocchi no bakemono wa

A lonely monster
Thought about the meaning of her life

“ningen nante sugu ni
shinjau” to
akiregao tsudzukete’ta

“Humans die
so soon!”
She was continually surprised by this

hitoribocchi no bakemono ni
koi ni ochite’ku shounenhei

A young soldier
Fell in love with the lonely monster

“kono mama shougai o
kurasou” to
te o tsunagi atsumeta

Thinking, “Let’s live like this
For the rest of our lives,”
They joined hands, warming each other

hajimatta hibi o
kamishimete
kodomo mo dekita bakemono wa

Contemplating
The daily life they’d embarked on
The monster, who had had a child

“kimi dake hitori
oite iku”

Realized, “You alone
Will get old”

kidzuite mou
taerarenai

Having realized that,
She couldn’t stand it

hebi no chikara o atsumete sa
naku nattatte
mou kamawanai

I combined the power of all my snakes
No longer caring
Whether I would lose it

owaranai sekai o
tsukutta n’da
kazoku dake de ikou

I made
An unending world
So I could go there with just my family

kimi o matsu doa no mae
itsumademo arawarenai

In front of the door, I waited for you
But you never appeared

nagareru kumo kazoete’ta
sora wa dokoka sabishisou de

I was counting the clouds as they floated by
The sky was somehow lonely

kimi ga konai nante
sonna koto
dokoka de kidzuite’ta

Somewhere along the line,
I realized
That you would never come

“sore nara mou
kyoumi mo nai”
sekai ni hitori kieyou ka

“In that case,
I don’t care anymore”
Should I disappear into that world by myself?

yurushitaku mo nai kimi no koto
ima wa mada, aishite’ru

I don’t want to forgive you
But even now, I still love you

Notes

The switch from third-person to first-person POV is in the original Japanese lyrics, although in a pronoun-dropping language it’s slightly more ambiguous where it happens–the first-person could start the stanza before where I have the shift happening. The “she” of the first part and the “I” of the second part are both the same person, Azami. It may be that she sees her younger self as almost a different person.
