Rain Drops – Mitsu no Aji

February 10, 2021

Mitsu no Aji – 蜜ノ味 – Sweet as Honey[1]

tanin no fukou wa mitsu no aji

The misfortunes of others are sweet as honey

ikura kouka na takara no kachi mo
wakaranai nara mokuzu to issho
nakushite hajimete kidzuku nante
atashi ni wa nai you da

No matter how valuable a treasure it is
If you don’t recognize it, it’s worthless flotsam
“When you lose something, you’ll realize its value”–
Yeah, that’s not me

karen ni yurete iru hana sura
hikichigitte chitte shimae

Even a delicate, swaying flower
Will be pulled apart and scattered to the wind

tanin no fukou wa mitsu no aji
jiron ni kamakete kuzu to kasu
dareka no migatte na kotoba wa iranai no
muyou na gomi mo anata no nara
jibun no mono ni to te o nobasu
mitasarenai mama ikite’ku no sa

“The misfortunes of others are sweet as honey”
I focus on this theory and it turns to garbage
I don’t need anyone’s selfish words
If you’re also useless trash
Reach out to yourself
And keep living, unsatisfied as you are

nantonaku tada ikite’ru hibi wa
shinda me o shita sakana to issho
sekai seifuku ya kanemochi yori mo
tanoshite itai monna

These days that I’m just living through aimlessly
Are like the eyes of a dead fish
I don’t want world domination or riches–
I just want to be happy

nani ni mo kaegatai
anata no akaku jukushita ima o

It’s hard to turn your red, ripe present moment
Into anything else

tanin no fukou wa mitsu no aji
hito o norou nara ana futatsu
sasai na kibi sura hotte okenai no
mijin mo aishite’nai keredo
jibun no tame ni hitsuyou nara
darekare mo kamawazu usobuku no sa

“The misfortunes of others are sweet as honey”
If you wish another person ill, dig two graves[2]
I can’t ignore even the most trivial of subtleties
I can’t love myself even a little bit
But if it’s necessary for my own sake
I’ll brag to anyone at all

kutte mo kutte mo tomannai
yoku wa doko made itte mo sumannai
uso ga ookiku natte’ku sokudo sore yori hayakute
ima wa ato ni mo saki ni mo kore ikkai
iwaba bon kara ochite’ku shanmerii
hara sukashite akai me de ita

I eat and eat but I can’t stop
No matter where I go, my hunger isn’t sated
My lies expand faster and faster
It’s like a glass of chammerry falling off a tray[3]
I was hungry and red-eyed

doku ni mo kusuri ni mo naranai
kono fuan mo ai mo subete ageru kara

It won’t be either poison or medicine
Because I’ll give you everything–both my anxiety and my love

tanin no fukou wa mitsu no aji
jiron ni kamakete kuzu to kasu
dareka no migatte na kotoba wa iranai no
muyou na gomi mo anata no nara
jibun no mono ni to te o nobasu
mitasarenai mama ikite’ku no sa
kitto

“The misfortunes of others are sweet as honey”
I focus on this theory and it turns to garbage
I don’t need anyone’s selfish words
If you’re also useless trash
Reach out to yourself
And keep living, unsatisfied as you are
For sure

Notes

[1] Literally “the taste/flavor of honey”

[2] Literally “there are two holes,” but the sources I found (such as Kotobank seem to agree that the “holes” refer to graves. The saying is similar in intent to the English “Before embarking on a journey of revenge, dig two graves.”

[3] Chammerry is a non-alcoholic champagne(-style beverage) popular in Japan.
